We have a busy group of governors who meet every half-term.

There are various types of governors on the governing body including parents, staff and co-opted governors who have been chosen due to the skills and experiences they can bring to the school.

Brief information about yourself:

I work at a Dental Laboratory.

I have a level 3 diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce.

Why did you want to be a governor?

I originally became a parent governor when my children attended this school over 20 years ago. I am passionate about the pupils and staff in the school and care about the impact the school has on the community.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

One of my first big projects was working with the road safety team to install safety signs and road markings outside the school to improve the safety for our pupils and parents.

I am involved in agreeing the School Improvement areas every year which drives the focus for development in the school.

I meet with the School Improvement Partner to look at the progress and impact of the improvement plan.

Through premises meetings, I have been part of the decisions and planning for new builds which have been added to the school including Key Stage 1 classrooms and Foundation Stage building improvements as well as the recently converted garden room.

I attend meetings which track progress and attainment of pupils and groups of pupils and look at the success of interventions and what leads to good progress.

I aim to support the staff, pupils and parents whenever I can.
J Frost (Head Teacher)

Brief information about yourself:

I have been a teacher for over 25 years in the Wakefield Area. I have taught across the primary age range and love the role. I became Head Teacher in 2008 and I am very proud of the school and the staff and pupils I have the pleasure to work with. I aim for every child to have the best experience in school and have a childhood that they look back on with fondness. I want school to prepare children to be the best people in the community that they can be and to be successful and happy in their life choices. I am a Local Leader of Education and also a Literacy Specialist for the Jerry Clay English Hub, where I support schools across Wakefield, Leeds and South Yorkshire.
We are trusted with people’s most treasured possessions in our job and this is a privilege we value in our school.

Which committees are you part of?

As Head Teacher, I attend all the committee meetings in our school.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

The values and experiences I want for every child has to be the passion of every member of the school. The staff are high quality and well trained and the investment which is identified for school means that this is a priority and impacts on the attainment, progress and experiences which our children have. I feel very proud to lead such a dedicated team and to see how the children flourish.
Danielle Johnson (Staff Governor)

Brief information about yourself:

I have taught for over eighteen years in the Wakefield Local Authority. During this time, I have taught across the primary phase from Nursery to Year Six. Currently, I am part of the Senior Leadership Team, the SENCo and one of the Designated Safeguarding Leads within school.

I am a staff governor.

I take part in the Standards and Pupils committee.

Why did you want to be a governor?

To support the school in ensuring the best possible outcomes for the children.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

As a school we are fortunate that the Governors and the Headteacher invest in employing a Speech and Language Therapist (SALT). This ensures our children’s speech needs are identified early and they receive timely support. Parents are also able to meet with the speech and language therapist in school to further support their child.

Working together with parents, teachers, support staff and other experts ensures the best possible outcomes; this has a real impact for the children at Stanley Grove.

Brief information about yourself:

I have lived in Stanley all my life, most of which was walking distance from Stanley Grove School. I am an IT project manager at a large retailer in Leeds and I am a STEM ambassador.

Type of Governor:

I am a Co-opted Governor and take the lead on PE and Maths. I sit on the Standards and Pupils Committee. / work on the GDPR working group to implement the changes which impact the school.

Why did you want to be a governor?

My son went to Stanley Grove. He benefitted greatly by attending Stanley Grove, in both education and personal development and / wanted to give something back while he was there. I continued after he left because of the great work done in the school for the children and community of Stanley.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

There are many tasks as governor that help the school, from reviewing policies and procedures and supporting the school with various issues, but my best day as a governor is when I spent the day in school interviewing different groups of children in each year group about their activities in PE and how they thought it impacted their physical and mental wellbeing. / was amazed at the diverse personalities in the school and their enthusiasm and eloquence speaking on the subject. It bodes well for the future of our children.

Brief information about yourself

I have worked in secondary education for over 20 years; I have a great depth of knowledge around strategic and operational management of a school along with a sound understanding of school governance and accountability. I am married with an adult daughter who also works in secondary education and a stepdaughter who attends Stanley Grove Primary Academy.

Why did you want to be a governor?

It is important to me that our local schools are supported and challenged effectively to ensure a world class education for children. I firmly believe that every child, at every stage in the educational journey, has the right to a world class education, should be treated with kindness, should be stretched to their potential and should, most importantly, be happy. Stanley Grove Primary Academy is a good school at the heart of the community it serves. I am pleased to be involved in the transition from Local Authority to a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) and in the next step-change for SGPA which will, hopefully, be to move the school from Good to Outstanding against current Ofsted criteria.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

Given that I am a new Governor, other than improving the capacity of the Governing Body, I have yet to make a real impact. In my professional role, I have a daily impact on the wellbeing of students and the wider impact that this may have with their families.

Brief information about yourself

I have lived in Stanley for nearly 8 years and have a son who attends Stanley Grove School. I am a Senior Probation Officer working locally with lead roles in child safeguarding, domestic abuse, and female offending. My day job involves managing a team of Probation Practitioners who are responsible for public protection and rehabilitation. I attend many of the local safeguarding meetings where joint decisions are made to protect and care for children and vulnerable adults in Wakefield. My son also keeps me busy with lots of his activities including gymnastics, athletics, and tennis.

Why did you want to be a governor?

Life is busy already, but I made the decision for two reasons, firstly I want to have a greater understanding of school and how decisions are made. Every child matters and using my professional knowledge and experience I hope I can combine both to support school, parent’s and children during their journey.
Secondly, my son started his education at Stanley School during COVID, I’m a lone parent and whilst I was at work, school provided stability, care and a focus which was the best start he could have experienced during testing times. In return I wanted to give something back.

What have you been part of in school which you feel has had a real impact?

I’m still a new Govenor with lots to learn. To date I’ve contributed to meetings, completed the required learning and I intend to visit school at the start of the new term. I’m looking forward to the next school year and understanding how I can support the school further.
